La Casa de Papel

I have waited to write this review until the last episode of season 4 of La Casa de Papel a.k.a Money Heist (8.5 IMDB, 91% rotten tomatoes), cause I've been hearing this series constantly nowadays. Popular things became popular for a reason, also LCDP, I just couldn’t imagine that this series would not ultimately disappoint. It did not. There's nothing close to a perfect series, same with LCDP, but I would say this series is good and I enjoyed watching it.

I heard some people saying this series is tedious and slow-paced, which I can't disagree because it is. The filming is indeed rather slow especially on season one and sucks you into the captivating story of a bank heist on the Royal Mint of Spain, where they print Euro bills, but it didn't make this series bad for that one reason only. I would bet my money for people who say this series is bad is just because they only watch the season one of the series or worse they only watch some episode of season one. It's a series, not a movie. If you judge a whole series by one episode only it's no different from you judge a movie base on the early 20 minutes of the movie. So be patient, watch the entire series, por favor...

The point of the show is there's a professor who is recruiting people to heist a bank. The story is most of all about the psychological cat-and-mouse game between the police & government and the “thieves”.

The good
  • Strong actors & strong characters. They are all insanely good at acting and make each character alive and not bland. The show does a great job of giving depth to each of them by giving them enough space to interact with others, revealing their motives and drives
  • The show set its twists and turns masterfully, leaving you gasping for more after each episode
  • I'm not a movie master whatsoever, but I'll say the cinematography and color shade is aesthetically eye-pleasing
  • I like that a show or movie isn't clearly defined things are good or bad, black or white, protagonist or antagonist. Same with this show, "the thief" is defined as neither good nor bad. Heisting a bank is technically bad, right? But the citizens support the thief cause they spoil how bad the government is. And the characters, not a plain protagonist or antagonist, they have both good and bad side, like people irl too
  • The show is pretty knowledgeable. You can learn some history, like in the Bella Ciao scene. You can learn geography by the alias name of the character that resembled a city. You can learn some human anatomy in the operation scene. And there's plenty of words or terms that you can learn like Stockholm syndrome, matriarchy, patriarchy, misogyny, etc. And also you can learn Spanish, but so far the only Spanish word that I know and expert at saying it is the swear word one lmao
The bad
  • Why so many unnecessary romantic subplots ugh, and one or two of which are too lame
  • I hate 'Tokyo' character, like stop ruining the gang and stay in the plan girl. She is one of the main characters, ofc because she is the narrator, which I hate. Also, she is just the bad copy-paste of Natalie Portman in Leon
  • Two of the best characters, Berlin and Nairobi-and the writer decide to put them down, SMH
  • There are some logic flaws
The conclusion is I'll give this show a solid 8. Not the best tv-shows that I ever watched but I enjoyed watching it.

Also, I wanted to say this. I love Berlin he's the best character and played by a really good actor, Pedro Alonso. Salute. It's such a shame that he died, I love how charismatic he was when leading the gang and I like the narcissistic and psychotic side of him, I definitely would be in a Stockholm syndrome if  I became his hostage lol :p
